WHY NOT HERE?

The exhi­bi­tion Why not here? inau­gu­ra­tes the new gal­le­ry spa­ce in War­saw – the bir­th­pla­ce of Wschód and the city which has so dra­sti­cal­ly chan­ged within recent deca­des. The exhi­bi­tion title prompts ever­mo­re recur­ring questions on how to situ­ate one­self within one’s sur­ro­un­dings. Can ‘here’ enfor­ce a set boun­da­ry to one’s ende­avor? To what extent do we lose sight of what is clo­se, by pur­su­ing what lies bey­ond the fami­liar?
The pres­sing natu­re of this inqu­iry is coded in the ethos of our cul­tu­ral pro­gram. Why not here? was a guiding tho­ught behind cho­osing to expand the gallery’s pre­sen­ce to Colo­gne and New York. The notion of loca­tion, ephe­me­ral or lasting, is not conc­lu­si­ve nor is it in any way limi­ting. Echo­ing the medi­ta­tions of Ame­ri­can art dealer David Kor­dan­sky, one may assu­me a more rewar­ding and curio­us appro­ach to a site whe­re arti­stic exchan­ge takes pla­ce – The notion of loca­tion, loca­tion, loca­tion has never stuck with me. Do your arti­sts make you a desti­na­tion? That’s the question. Infor­med by each artist’s own con­tem­po­ra­ne­ity and cata­ly­sed by the spe­cu­la­ti­ve natu­re of cura­to­rial motif the exhi­bi­tion invi­tes us to leave a mark on the pre­sent, cho­ose ‘here’ as the new begin­ning.
